Monogram on the Spot at L’Aventure: The Louis Vuitton Travel Pop Up in Paris

Wall of luggage tags at the L’Aventure Travel Pop Up Shop

When I found out this week’s #FriFotos theme was the alphabet, I decided to take the opportunity to tell you about the really cool Parisian pop up shop I just visited.

If you’re going to be in Paris before the end of December, I highly recommend checking out Louis Vuitton’s travel-themed pop up shop, L’Aventure, located at 22 Avenue Montaigne. The store not only explains the history of Louis Vuitton’s brand origins as luggage makers to French aristocrats and now the likes of Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. The shop will close on December 31st, 2013.

Wall of Louis Vuitton trunks, both old and new

The shop is full of travel related eye candy as well– from Louis Vuitton City Guides to colorful luggage tags you can have monogrammed with your initials right on the spot (it’s a free service for up to three initials). There is even a beyond fabulous Louis Vuitton leather hammock that I was temped to try out while the monogram machine was warming up.

Left:  Dear Santa- can I have this leather swing? Right: The Louis Vuitton leather hammock’s chic gold clasp

Service at the shop was top notch and I thought it served as a really good introduction to the brand. City guides and luggage tags and other accessories were surprisingly affordable, making them perfect holiday gifts.

One, two or three letter monograms are free of charge at the L’Aventure Pop Up

Not going to Paris anytime soon? You can check out the Louis Vuitton City Guides in Digital format using the Louis Vuitton Amble app for iPhone. The app is free and the Digital City guides on Amble come in multiple languages and are available as an in-app purchases (the Paris Guide cost $9.99).

So even if a custom monogrammed Louis Vuitton trunk is beyond your budget, the Amble app and City Guides are a digital budget luxury.

Great Mobile iPhone Apps for a Trip to Berlin

I posted this picture I shot near the Bradenburg Gate with my iPhone on EyEm

When you roll global and mobile like me, you rely a lot on your smart phone. While my iPhone is used primarily as a camera, it’s also becoming a great mobile tour guide. During my recent trip to Berlin, there were three mobile apps that I found incredibly useful, and having them on my iPhone spared me the hassle of carrying around a guide book. I highly recommend checking out all three of these apps.

The Full Index for The TIME Magazine #TIMEwireless Instagram Identification Username Project

While this TIME Magazine The Wireless Issue Instagram Username Identification project was time intensive and involved a lot of research, the feedback the My Life’s A Trip team has been incredibly rewarding and validating. Since the first post on Friday, we’ve gotten thanks you notes, tweets, emails, and comments from the USA, South Africa, Singapore, Congo, Argentina, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Switzerland (among other countries) all from contributors to the #TIMEwireless project who didn’t know they had their instagram (or instagrams) on the cover until we told them.

I’ve reached out to the TIME Magazine editor who wrote the call for entries via twitter, LinkedIn, and instagram but haven’t gotten a response, and I don’t think I will. At this point, I don’t think there is much more that I can do without being a pest. The goal of this project was always to give back to the mobile photography community that I have gotten so much from.

So in the event we don’t ever hear from TIME,  I’d like everyone whose image has been involved in this project to know that your work is good, and you can count yourselves among photographers such as Mark Seliger or any of the fab photographers featured on the TIME Magazine Cover Pinterest page. Yep, that is your image on the cover in the same row with President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney.

My Life’s a Trip is passionate about quality photography, mobile technology, and social media, and it’s global impact. We would appreciate it if you could help spread the word about this project via your social media platform of choice.
Below are a few of the touching tweets and comments that we’ve received, and they have all made this project worthwhile– they’ve all made the project so worthwhile.

Note: This post will be updated and revised if and when we discover more IGers whose images are included.

Here is the full list and cover position of all of identified Instagram usernames from this project. There are some amazing feeds and I recommend checking out at least  a few of them. I also hope some of these new blog readers enter The 2012 My Life’s A Trip Vacation Photo Contest, where we will be giving out fab prizes as well as photo credit!

TIME Magazine: The Wireless Issue Cover Breakdown and #TIMEwireless Instagram Username Identification Project

The My Life’s A Trip team is proud to give credit and attribution to the instagram users behind 100 of the images that were used on the cover of the 2012 TIME Magazine The Wireless Issue through our Cover Breakdown and Instagram Username Identification Project.

Editor’s Note: In August, I was surprised to discover 5 of my instagrams on the cover of the TIME magazine’s 2012 The Wireless Issue. I was lucky to notice my instagram because it wasn’t font blocked by headlines or letters, as most of the images were. Font blocking is nothing new for photographers who shoot magazine covers. A magazine cover image is always just a background for headlines. The bigger complaint I kept hearing on social media was that very few of the instagram users whose images were used were given any credit by TIME Magazine. A small selection of “editors favorites” made it into a slideshow on the TIME website, with those photographers credited.

Just because TIME Magazine didn’t tell you if your instagram was chosen for the edit, that doesn’t mean My Life’s A Trip can’t (or at least try to)! So I decided to have my assistant, Anastasia, lead a team of researchers from Dev-Pro to try and identify as many of the instagram images and users as possible.

The research team was able to identify 100 usernames in total. We are proud to give credit and attribution to the instagram users behind 100 of the images that were used on the cover of the 2012 TIME Magazine The Wireless Issue. The first 37 usernames are in this post.

Below is Anastasia’s report about the project, which brings to light some of the issues and limitations of instagram’s “mobile only” platform.

The cover for TIME Magazine’s “THE WIRELESS ISSUE 10 Ways Your Phone is Changing the World” shows an edit of 288 Instagram photographs from across the world. And since the issue itself contains a lot of statistics and infographics that illustrates human dependency on smartphones and tablets, we decided to make an info graphic about TIME cover itself:

All featured Instagrams can be divided into the following categories:

  • Nature & Sunrises – 77 pics.
  • City Architecture – 62 pics.
  • People – 51 pics.
  • Animals – 17 pics.
  • Food – 13 pics.
  • Beach – 11 pics.
  • Vehicles – 12 pics.
  • Flowers – 5 pics.
  • Misc – 40 pics.

An attempt to find (and identify) the photographers of all Instagram images featured on the cover of the TIME Wireless issue became a real challenge. Since Instagram is a “mobile only” social media it still doesn’t have a fully functional web viewer. Sites like Statigram and Webstagram allow you to search images by @username or #hashtag only, but not by date or, for example, two tags at the same time. The only way to find who those photos belong to was to check all 31,000 instagrams manually. This actually turned out to be over 36,000 instagrams because people kept using the #TIMEwireless hashtag even after the issue was published. It took a team of 4 researchers 24 hours total to identify the usernames who contributed 100 of the instagrams used on the cover. It took an additional 13 hours by two researchers to try and find contact information for these instagram users.

We are excited to share our results and the instagram usernames of the first 37 instagram users we’ve identified. This first group are users who have blogs (and thus are easier to contact). Only two of these users identified in the list below have work that My Life’s A Trip was previously familiar with: Nicholas Carron of We are JUXT, a great mobile photography blog and collective of mobile artists; and Taylor Michie, an extremely bright high school student who writes for HuffPost Teen as well as his own blog listed below.

The first 37 instagram usernames (and names and associated blogs) are as follows:

Did you find your instagram on the cover? Or, maybe, you know someone who did? Help us to fill the gaps by adding a comment in the comments section below. We will identify more instagram users in future posts so stay tuned…

Podcast and Postagram Tips!

San Francisco

Last week while I was in San Francisco I was honored to be Doc Pop’s first guest on The Postagram Tips series. Check out the video we made discussing some of my favorite iPhone apps for mobile photography travel photos. If you aren’t familiar with it already, you should check out the Postagram App. It’s a cool way to send real postcards made with photos your own instagram photos.

I also did my first podcast as a guest on Christian Peacock’s It’s All Related interview series. While I’m definitely new to the world of podcasts,  it was an adventure and I’m thrilled to be adding this element to this multi-media travel diary. Check out the It’s All Related podcast where we discuss mobile technology and global travel here.
