The San Juan National Forest covers 2,936 square miles of southwestern Colorado. I wasn’t familiar with it until I drove through the area last week on my way from Durango to Cresto Ranch. I’ve included a few of my favorite shots from the area in this photo essay.

It has gorgeous scenery which visitors can take in during a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, horseback riding, camping or four wheel drive. Skiing is popular during the winter months (Telluride is located in the San Juan mountains).

While exploring the area, I came across this lone phone booth in the San Juan National Forest. I suppose it could come in handy if Clark Kent is ever in the area and needs to change into his Superman outfit without blowing his cover.

I also found this painted lady on a tree trunk near Dolores, Colorado rather charming.
