Punta Mita Sunset: a Mobile Photography Experiment Using Timelapse

 Sunset St Regis Pool Beach

Sunset at the St. Regis Beach Club Pool

Watching a beautiful sunset with a tropical drink in your hand is pretty much a requirement for any Mexican beach vacation.

After getting some amazing captures on my iPhone the night before (including a great panorama using PhotoSynth), I decided to try out the TimeLapse app on my iPhone 4S to document the spectacular sunsets here at the St. Regis Punta Mita.

Last night I got to the beach club pool just before sunset with my cameras and my iPhone tripod-like mount of choice, the In Your Face Viewbase.

Time lapse set up iPhone on mounton

Time lapse set up: My pool side mobile photography set-up: iPhone 4S mounted in my In Your Face View Base clamp and a glass of water with lime. To Quote my mulitiple Emmy-winning friend, Aaron Shure, who is a clown-turned-Executive-Producer-of-The -Office-slash-Future-Clown, “Shoot high,  BUT ALWAYS EDIT SOBER.”

I set up my iPhone in the View Base, which I clamped to a pool chaise and set horizontally. I set up the TimeLapse App for a 15 minute shoot to last a total of 20 seconds. Then I sat and sipped water with lime (no margaritas during this shoot, I was working!) and let the app do it’s thing. I shot with my other cameras during this time. I did this 3 times because I wasn’t sure of the exact time the sun dipped below the horizon.

Photo tip: when shooting time lapses of sunsets, do some research and figure out what time the sun is actually going to set so you can calculate properly.

Here is the resulting time lapse. The app allows you to add music directly from your iPhone but I did it on YouTube instead to avoid any rights issues.

Enjoy the sunset!
