#FriFotos: Symbols, Sri Lanka, and Duran Duran

Prayer Flags at a Buddhist Monastery In the Ancient Holy city of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO world heritage site

This week’s #FriFotos theme is “symbols” and there are several here in Sri Lanka I thought were worth sharing.

A group of monks in Anuradhapura wearing saffron & paprika colored robes, which are traditional symbols of Theravada Buddhist monks in Southeast Asia.

Hipstamatic Sri Lanka

Hipstamatic Anuradhapura, The Ancient Capital City

I’m currently spending a few days in Sri Lanka, the 76th country I’ve visited. Between the pimped out tuk-tuks, the men rocking traditional sarongs, and the incredibly warm people who are excited that tourism is thriving in their country, I’m crushing on Sri Lanka… HARD.

This island country has so much to see I’m only getting a taste of it this trip, focusing on Anuradhapura and Columbo (and surrounding environs).

The vibe here feels very much like Bali did back in the late ’90s… bubbling up with an amazing assortment of cultural wonders, spirituality, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Inside OZONE, The World’s Tallest Bar, at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong

The Lights at OZONE Change Colors

Up on the 118th floor of the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong is the world’s tallest bar, OZONE. When the weather allows for it, OZONE offers some spectacular views of Victoria Harbour and the city’s skyline. But the bar’s super modern, Jetson’s glamorous interior is pretty spectacular on it’s own, with lights changing colors and dramatic mirrors and lighting fixtures. OZONE serves “Asian tapas”– small plates ranging from sushi & sashimi to vegetable samosas and Wagyu beef mini-burgers. The mini-burgers were a definite standout on the menu.

The cocktails and champagne offered are extensive too, with an entire menu page dedicated to Gin drinks. On Sundays, OZONE serves a sky high brunch complete with Dom Perignon. There’s a resident DJ spinning during the week, too.

Teufelsberg: A Mobile Photo Essay in Black and White

Walking through the Grunewalde Forest- I shot this image with Thirty Six and then edited using EyeEm‘s kCe filter

The light during my recent trip to Berlin was a bit overcast and grey the day I visited the abandoned spy station in Teufelsberg, so I made an effort to shoot with my iPhone in black and white, using both ProCamera and the Thirty Six app.

I paid attention to light, details and textures and got some interesting results. Here is a photo essay featureing favorite black and white mobile photography images from Teufelsberg.

Review of Lang Bar at the Waldorf Astoria Berlin

Glamour & Glass at Berlin’s Lang Bar

Of all of the public spaces I saw at Berlin’s recently opened Waldorf-Astoria hotel, it’s the glamorous deco-inspired Lang Bar. This serious cocktail lounge, located on the hotel’s second floor, is the most inspired space on the property. The fixtures are beautiful and the banquettes comfortable.

The barbacks are not mere bartenders her but serious mixologists who handcraft cocktails that go for €16 a drink.
